The Phyllotaxis Screensaver project is a nice little project I did for myself. It's an OpenGL screensaver based on Fibonacci phyllotaxis [Greek phyllo, leaf + taxis, arrangement]. The Fibonacci Numbers and the Golden Ratio appear in many ways in nature: from the multiplying behavior of rabbits to the growth of seashells. The inspiration for this screensaver comes from seed heads of flowers like the sunflower. In the growth of these seed heads the arrangement forms an optimum packing of the seeds so that, no matter how large the seed head, the seeds are uniformly packed at any stage. Through this growth we see the formation of spiral patterns.
I also used phyllotaxis for the amicitia public web interface and the CreditsGenerator program.
windows
I originally wrote the screensaver for windows. To install the binary download
phyllotaxis.scr and copy it to C:\WINNT\system32.
The sources for the screensaver are available as
a Visual C++ project.
linux
Artm ported the screensaver to linux. You can find sources and binary's at
http://freshmeat.net/projects/phyllosaver
